John's
Art Career
He
started working life in 1959 as a gardener in Dundee and his horticultural
career advanced at a fast pace with travel all over Britain, and
a head full of landscaping ideas, however, he always painted in
his spare time as a form of art therapy, then as he found success
with his love of painting, he became a full time artist in 1992.
The home garden is now the hobby.

Gardening Art
John gets the 2008 TOP AWARD
John rented a plot in 2006 on Dundee City Council's City Road Allotment
Garden site to grow crops, and find a new source of ideas to paint
with old sheds, greenhouses, fences and walls and dilapidated garden
structures of great character perfect to capture on canvas.
Some of these paintings can be seen on this link to allotment
gardening.
John's love of gardening has paid dividends with his experimenting
with warm climate crops in Scotland possible with global warming.
Grapes, peaches and Figs are now all growing outdoors on trial.
John's allotment won the award for the best allotment in Dundee
in the Councils Britain in Bloom competition in 2008.
SASKATOONS
John is also experimenting with growing a new fruit crop of Saskatoons
on his allotment garden and keeping a diary of events as the young
bushes mature.
Have
a look on the progress of John's superfood
Saskatoons , the new berry
to hit the fruit garden. He is hoping they will produce a crop in
Scottish soils and with our climatic conditions, which vary tremendously
from the prairies of Canada where they grow in abundance. The bushes
produced their first small crop of fruit in July 2007, after a record
breaking spell of wet and sunless weather, so early superfood tastings
left a lot to be desired. However although 2008 was even worse it
did get excellent weather up to the end of May so the resultant
second crop of 9 lbs was quite good.
The 2009 crop was fantastic with an average of 5 pounds fruit from
each bush.
The success was featured on television when Jim McColl from
the Beechgrove Garden filmed John, his allotment and his saskatoon
adventures.
Visit John on his Scottish Saskatoon stand at the Dundee Flower and Food Festival
at Camperdown park from 3rd to 5th September 2010. Saskatoon plants for sale as well as outdoor grape vines suitable for the Scottish climate.

John's love of horticulture is evident in the development and design
of his large garden full of fruit and flowers in bloom all year
round, many of which get captured on canvas.
This garden is well planted, mature and has a wealth of subject
matter ready for painting.

John has included a link to a page for
Garden Trees suited to the small garden, now that the
young trees have put on a bit of growth.
New blog
John is now writing a gardening feature for the Dundee Courier which will be archived on his new blog
The Artist and his Garden blog.

gardening activities and new paintings on my new blogspot.
Interior Design and Corporate Art
Large contemporary paintings and stretched box canvas can be very
appropriate for Corporate and interior
design use.
Company promotions often use art for calendars, Christmas cards,
prints, and retirement gifts and to record special events,
eg. "Tall Ships Race", "Dundee's Octocentenary Celebrations"
and "A Moment in Time" painted for the Millenium.
