A Japanese maple called Acer palmatum sangokaku makes a beautiful garden specimen small tree growing to about 2.5 metres or so depending on soil and local climate. My specimen is nearly two metres and only planted three years ago.

In winter the bright red stems are a very attractive feature and in autumn the foliage colours are brilliantly dazzling.
