Cordyline
australis can add a touch of the exotic to the small
garden and is fairly hardy. This small garden tree can
put on a few feet of growth each year in good growing
weather and will often go to 20 feet or more.
However our unpredictable Scottish climate can give
us the occasional severe spell of cold winter weather
when minus 20 F. has been recorded. This will kill the
Cordyline down to ground level, but it often re-emerges
a year or two later as a multi stemmed plant.
It
is very popular in the west and north coastal areas
where close proximity to the warm influence of the gulf
stream ensures that frost is seldom a problem.
